ICELAND CANNOT BE IMAGINED

The first permanent resident of Iceland was the Norwegian Ingolfur Arnarson who settled there in approximately 874. He and his brother had fallen out with a Norwegian earl and killed his sons, after which they had to flee from Norway. On a reconnaissance voyage to the west, they landed in what we today know as Iceland. Independent for more than 300 years, Iceland was later ruled by first Norway and then Denmark. Devolved government was introduced in 1874, and Iceland became effectively independent in 1918, although the King of Denmark remained the head of state until 1944 when the country became a republic.
